The Mode Dial and Histograms

There are many different settings on the mode dial. Some of them are more of training wheels or for when you don’t want to think about all the factors of a picture. However, that makes it harder for you to be creative if you let the camera choose all of the settings. Among the auto modes there are landscape, portrait, no flash, full auto, night, sports, and macro settings. These modes allow the camera to choose what it thinks is the best f-stop, shutter speed, and ISO. While these usually produce pretty good pictures, they are regarded as easy to do, and the photographer might not ever get out of their comfort zone. The other four modes on the mode dial are Program, Tv, Av, and Manual. These are the modes where the photographer makes most of the decisions, with Program being the least amount and Manual being the most. All of these modes can be helpful and when they are used to their fullest, a photographer can get great pictures.

Here is a picture of my camera’s mode dial.

I took this picture with aperture priority on. It made a very small depth of field, which focused on the olive and drew the picture together. If I was doing it again, I would make the depth of field a little bigger so that some of the other leaves could be in the picture.

I took this picture looking into a pretty dark office. I had the full auto setting on and it turned a really dark room into a nice viewable picture. If I was taking this picture again, I would turn on night mode because it was such a dark room.

This picture was taken with macro mode on to capture the tiny leaf. It blurred the whole background, but the leaf itself is in perfect focus. If I had to take this picture again, I would maybe pick a different subject because the leaf is a little boring.

This picture was taken with sports mode. It captured her jumping with minimal blur which was the intended effect. I would maybe make the shutter speed even faster if I was taking this again so that her feet wouldn’t be as blurry.

I took this picture in manual mode in a mirror. It’s also in black and white, which affects the mood of the picture. I like that its exposed to where you can barely see my face, but you can still see the camera. If I was taking this picture again, I might make the exposure just a bit higher so that it wasn’t quite as dark. This is my favorite picture because I took it in manual mode and so it was harder to get right. I also like it because I learned how to take pictures in black and white.
