Depth of Field

DOF in photography means depth of field. Depth of field is the distance in the photo that appears sharp or “in focus.” Everything inside the depth of field looks sharp but what isn’t in the depth of field gradually becomes more blurred.

A photographer should use DOF for pictures because it can help make the object that you are focused on standout more. It shows what you should be looking at and blurs out the backround which can be not as important.

Small DOF pictures can be like a close-up of a plant or animal which blurs the background showing what the focus is. A big DOF is when you want to include the background and not isolate one single thing like a landscape city picture.

Understanding Depth of Field - A Beginner's Guide

Aperture Change

Each picture here has a different depth of field; this is because of the aperture setting on the camera. Aperture is the size of the lens opening creating the DOF. In the first picture you can’t see the background as much like the soccer goals or the tent. But as you go on in the pictures it becomes more and more defined to where you can see the tent and goals almost clearly.

The distance from the object also affects the depth of field. The closer you are to the object that you are taking a picture of the more focused it will be on that object and blur the rest of the backround. The farther you are the less blur it has on the background and focus on the object.

I chose this as my featured image because I like the setting of the picture. It shows a student studying while in the background some are distracted. I also like how the background is blurred and it is focused on the one student mostly.
