The rule of thirds divides a frame into 3rds. to follow the rule of thirds, you want to keep the main subject or horizon line on the thirds lines or on the place where the lines cross. the image below shows what the rule of thirds diagram looks like. by using the rule of thirds, it lays out images nicely, and will draw the viewer into the picture by guiding their eyes through the image. sometimes by breaking the rule of thirds (ex: centering; having motion “leading off” of the image), it also creates a cool effect that guides the viewer and forces them to think through a “backstory” to the image. <\/p>\n\n\n

most of these images follow rule of thirds pretty closely. this helps to create motion in the images. the top middle image, however, is positioned so it looks like the bike would soon move off the picture, however, because of the buildings and sky behind it, i think it gives it a cool effect, because it leads you to kind of wonder what the backstory is, or if the bike is leaving something behind. an example of breaking and using rule of thirds in the same image would be the 2nd row from top, far right. in this image the flowers and sunset are centered which gives it a satisfying feeling, however rule of 3rds isn’t totally broken because the horizon line and flowers are on a line. the last image i featured because of the memory it brings and how the bow guides your eyes through the picture out into the woods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
