Action and Panning

An Introduction

Why does shutter speed create a sense of time or motion? The shutter speed is the setting that affects how fast the camera lens is open for. The faster the shutter speed is the more it will freeze the motion that is happening and not be blurry. But the slower the shutter speed is the more the picture or motion that is happening will get blurred. So if there is a shorter shutter speed it looks like the person is running really fast but if there is a fast shutter speed it looks like it is going very slow which affects adds a sense of motion.

Panning

If you are trying panning before you push the shutter release button you start following the object with you camera and then you push the shutter release button and keep following it with your camera. This causes the object to be clear but the background to be blurred.

Short verses long shutter speed

A photographer should use a long shutter speed if they want their picture to have more motion blur. An example of when they could want that is when someone is running around and they want the feet or whatever part of their body is moving blurred to make you be able to tell they are moving. A photographer should use short shutter speed if they want to freeze a motion and they don’t want that motion to be blurry. An example of this would be if water is dripping and you want an individual water droplet or if you want a picture of someone who is jumping mid air and you want it to be clear.

Canon EOS Rebel T7 2026-10-14 15:55:43 f/4.5 1/4000sec ISO-3200 36mm Horizontal (normal)

I chose this picture as my featured image because I like the way that you can see the individual water droplet. I also like how the water droplet is against the brick and then the ground is blurred.
