Action and Panning:

Shutter Speed: this controls how long the shutter of the camera stays open.

Panning: using a slow-motion horizontal ways to capture the action in a picture

Shutter speed is a typical use for any photographer. Most photographers like to change their shutter speed, all depending on the picture they are taking. If you would use a slower shutter speed, then anything that is moving or in action will be blurry. This is because the shutter is open longer, and therefore giving more time and space for a picture to be taken which results in a blurrier picture. If you have a faster shutter speed then most times, depending on how fast your shutter speed is, anything that is moving will be a sharp image instead of blurry.

Panning is another way to capture the action in something that is moving. Panning is really cool where it captures the motion of the photo and takes a sharp picture of the object but portrays the activity happening in the photo through how blurry the background is. It is a pretty cool thing to try as well.

This is a slower shutter speed. The ball is in motion and is blurry because the shutter was open long enough to capture the ball moving. This shows the action in the picture with the main subject being blurry and showing the movement through that.

I took this picture with the same shutter speed as the top photo. This again shows the motion of the volleyball because of how blurry it is. Nothing else in the photo is blurry because it’s not moving enough for it to become blurry.

This also has the same shutter speed as the top two. This shows that the faster something is the blurrier it is if you have a slower shutter speed. This is still a cool picture though because it shows that there is a lot of action happening in the photo. The kids are running very fast and you can tell that because of what is blurry in the photo.

This photo I took with a faster shutter speed. You can tell because the objects (people) in motion are not blurry like the one above this one. It captures all the movement in a crisp and clean picture, yet still showing that there is a lot of action going on. This also used panning because he ran right past me and I wanted a clean image that got the action. Panning can help you get those types of pictures.

This is my favorite image because it shows so much motion in this photo. It’s exciting to look at this photo because you can see all the kids running really fast. I also love that this image has some blurriness to it. It’s not blurry enough to not understand what the subject is but it’s enough to show that there is quite a bit a movement in this picture. I took this photo through panning, and it is really amazing to see what pictures you can when you pan.
