Action and Panning

How does shutter speed affect motion in a picture?

Adjusting your shutter speed can be a great way to create motion and a sense of time in your photos. Shutter speed is how long the shutter on your camera is open for. The longer your shutter is open, the more blur motion you will see in your photo.

What is panning?

Panning is when you take a photo of someone or something in motion in order to create movement in your photo. You can achieve this by following the subject in motion while keeping it in focus. This technique creates unique photos where your subject is clearly in focus while the background is blurred.

How do I know what shutter speed to use?

When trying to find a shutter speed it is important to know how you want your picture to look. A short shutter speed is used for freezing motion in pictures. While a long shutter speed is used to blur the motion caught in the photo. Short shutter speeds can include numbers between 1/50-1/4000 of a second. Long shutter speeds can include 1/40 of a second to 30 seconds.

In this post I will be showing you how short and long shutter speeds can capture action in pictures. I will also being showing you some panning pictures I took.

I chose this image as my featured image because I think it captures how shutter speed can be used effectively. Because of how I used a short shutter speed, I was able to capture my mother cracking an egg right as the yoke was dropping. I love this picture because it reminds me of an intense cooking show because of the low exposure and moody lighting.
