Leading Lines

Leading lines in photography can be described as lines that lead to the subject of a photo. These “lines” can be straight, curved, diagonal, etc. This technique can be helpful in photography because it helps guide the viewers eye through the photo in a specific way.

In this post you will see how I used leading lines to create depth and guidance in my photos.

In this photo the window in the back of the photo is kind of acting as the subject. The lights leading up to the window are the leading lines used in this picture. The Lines on the ceiling are also leading to the back of the photo. However, if I took this photo again I would brighten it up and create much more focus on the window and plant as the subject. That being said, I am not completely happy with this photo, but it does show the technique of leading lines well.

This photo shows leading lines in a unique way. I think the leading lines are also every closely connected to the subject. The line of children lead down the hallway, which creates the depth that leading lines are supposed to create. However the children are also the subject of the photo. Meaning that the leading lines are the subject.

In this photo I used a court line to lead to the girl bumping a volleyball. This leading line helps your eye follow directly to the subject, which is the girl in the center.

Lastly, this photo is my favorite photo and featured image for a couple reasons. One reason I really like this photo is because of the leading line that leads you to the subject. The subject is a girl doing a cartwheel. I like how her body and posture lines up with the gym floor line. I also like how her feet are blurred in order to create that movement happening.
