Framing

Framing in photography is a simple concept that can create beautiful pictures. Framing is exactly what it sounds like. It is when you add a foreground object (or frame) to your photo in order to highlight the subject. The purpose of this is to draw the viewers eye to the subject. A good photographer uses framing to enhance their composition by creating a picture with a unique perspective. You can begin using framing by capturing pictures with elements around a subject. For example, you could take a picture of your friend, and add flowers or greenery around their face to create a framed picture. The image below is an example of what quality framing can look like. As you can see in the photo, the photographer used a torn wired fence to frame the city behind it.

In this post I will be showing you twelve examples of how I used framing to compose some pictures.

In this photo I used someone else’s phone to frame my picture. There is almost a double framing affect in this picture because the mirror is also used as a framing element which gives the photo a unique perspective.

Both of these images show framing, however they have a different look and feel. The image to the left is focusing on the plants in the foreground, while the image to the right is focusing on the sun. In both images the plants are framing the sun.

In this picture I used the stair railing leading to the basement to frame Megan’s mom doing a puzzle. I like this picture because it gives a unique perspective and highlights her being locked in on her puzzle.

Both of these images show framing as well. In both images I used my car mirror to frame something. In the left image I used it to frame the skyline/road. In the right image I used the mirror to frame my hand.

This picture is also showing framing. I used one of the plants in our school to frame my friend Megan.

Both of these images show framing in different ways. In the photo to the left, I framed the sunset with my glasses. In the photo to the right, I framed the horizon with a window.

In this photo I used a rose bush and a tree to frame a farther tree that was standing by itself.

This photo also shows framing. I used a railing in front of a coffee shop to frame a bush.

This is my favorite framing photo that I have taken. I used a fence to frame three pots that were sitting beside a pond. I like this one the most because It’s a really clear example of what framing looks like. I also love how everything in the photo seems to come in threes. It makes the photo look finished.
