ISO, White Balance, & Bracketing

Introduction

ISO is how grainy or textured the photo is. Changing the ISO settings changes how sensitive the camera is to light. When you set a higher ISO the camera is more sensitive so the photo turns out more textured. If it’s a lower ISO it’s less sensitive but less grainy. ISO is the third part of the exposure triangle. When you have the right shutter speed, aperture, and ISO numbers your image turns out better.

White balance– Settings in the camera that let you adjust the color temperatures to make whites look white and affect the overall tone. Color temperature is how cool or warm the light source is that is in the photo. Each setting affects the hue of the picture. The daylight, shade, and cloudy all add a warmer tone to the picture when applied. The Tungsten and fluorescent have a bluer, cooler tone.

White Balance Settings- Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent

These photos are listed in order from the least ISO number to the greatest. 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600. As they go down the list the pictures get more grainer adding more texture to the image.

White Balance Settings

In the following pictures, I took them with the same settings only in different lightings to see the difference.

Outside in Sunlight

The cards in front of the water bottle show what white balance setting it is set at. Depending on what the setting is, the lighting will have more of a whiter, bluer, or yellower tone to it.

Outside in the Shade

All these pictures have more of a grayer/darker tone to them compared to the first sunlight ones. But you can still see the difference between the white balance settings.

In the Gym

These pictures all have a yellower tone to them and a lot less blue than what the sunlight and shade pictures did. The fourth picture is not focused but the lighting still show a cooler tone than the other ones.

In the Library

These also show the same as the other sections. The daylight, shade, and cloudy are more of a warmer tone and the fluorescent and tungsten have a cooler tone to them.

Bracketing Examples

These pictures were taken at basically the same time, the only difference is their exposure. The left is darker taken at -1, the middle is taken at normal exposure, and the right one is +1. I like the right one better because it is taken in a darker setting so it makes the image more inviting.

The left on is taken at -1 exposure, the middle at 0, and the right taken at +1. I like the middle one better because the left is too dark and the right is too light and all the people distract from the subject, which is Jason, since they are lighter.

These pictures are also bracketed, listed in order from least exposure to highest like the other pictures. I like the right one more because the other two are too dark.

The photo on the left is taken at -1 exposure, the middle at 0, and the right at +1 exposure. I like the left one the best because the darker exposure made the red shirt pop.

These pictures are also taken with the left at -1 exposure, middle at 0, and the right at +1. I like the left one better because it is a brighter lighting so the dark exposure balances it out.

These pictures are listed in order from least to greatest exposure. I like the third one better because it is originally a darker picture so the lighter exposure makes everything brighter.

I chose this photo as my featured image because I like her smile and the story it tells. This picture was taken when I was bracketing images. Her silly smile as she listens to the story adds character to the picture.
