Leading Lines

Leading lines can be really helpful in photography because they provide an easy way to draw attention to the subject. These lines can show up in many ways from being in a railing to arrows to signs on the road. They are meant to take your eye on a journey around the picture and this gives the picture more action.

In this picture the lines lead between the two girls with the horizontal lines. The vertical lines lead the eye back farther into the picture where the rest of the kids are having their recess. All of the people are the subject of the picture and the lines connect to all of them.

This picture doesn’t have as clear of a subject that the lines are pointing to. However, what I was going for is the door bar would point down the rest of the hallway where the lights are shining and to the entrance of the cafeteria. I would say the subject of the picture is the door itself and it’s pointed to with the door opener.

This picture has the leading lines as the subject. The lines crisscross and lead the eye all over the picture, from the railing on the stairs to the railing by the chairs and ending with the lines on the ceiling. There are diagonal and straight lines throughout this picture.

The leading lines in the picture all point out of the picture which is unfortunate. The water bottle lids and the bleachers all point to the right and so the subject becomes the water bottles themselves and the different colors they have.

This picture has a really good example of leading lines because all the red poles point towards the balls on the other end of the cart. They are really bright which contrasts the dark muted colors of the surrounding area. The subject is right in the middle of all the lines and so the eye is drawn there immediately.

In this picture the leading lines all draw towards Sophia because she is the subject. The railings are the main lines, while the stairs also have lines of continuity that are broken by her, which makes her stand out even more.

This picture has arrows for the leading lines, which point to the people in the distance. It also has lines along the walls and ceiling that point the people.

This is my favorite picture because the lines are very stark and draw the eye right to the end of the hallway. They also make it so that you’re first drawn to the people slightly out of focus on the right side, but then it keeps going down the hall to the bright lights of the cafeteria. Technically, there are almost two subjects in this picture because the lines lead to both of them.
