ISO, White Balance & Bracketing

Introduction

ISO is the setting on a camera that changes how sensitive the camera is to light. A higher ISO means that your photo will have more texture, while a lower ISO means that you will have a less grainy photo. White balance is when you adjust color temperture to make white look white and affect the overall tone.

Some Common Modes are:

  1. Tungsten (or incandescent)
  2. Fluorescent
  3. Daylight
  4. Cloudy
  5. Shade
  6. Flash

The Exposure Triangle

This is the exposure triangle and it helps figure out the correct balance of apeture, ISO, and shutter speed to achieve the nicest picture.

What Is Bracketing?

Everything You Need to Know About HDR Bracketing - O2I

Bracketing is when you take multiple shots of the same scene at different exposure values. This will ensure that at least one of your photos will have good light exposure.

The Cameras White Balance

A cameras white balance is a setting that adjusts the color temperture to ensure that the white objects appears white, no matter the light source. The color tempeture is either a cooler tone of the picture or a warmer tone and then there will also be a middle photo that is the cameras seggested pick. The overall white balance of the picture can change the feeling behind it. A cooler tone or more blue tone can made the photo feel more sad or cold. While a warmer tone like oranges and yellows can made it feel more inviting, but not always sometime they will all look really nice. It will come down to just picking which one is more pleasing to you.

ISO Settings

These are the picture of my water bottle that I only changed the ISO. You can tell that the last picture is. way more blurry, compared to the first one. This is all effected by the ISO camera settings. The larger the number of ISO the more sharp the image will look because there will be no camera shake. Compared to the last picture with a ISO of 100 which then the blurriness will come from camera shake.

Changing White Balance Settings

These are my pictures for when I changed the white balance setting. You can tell which setting I was using by the label on the little card. You can tell that some of them are blue while others are more yellow. That has to do with the light exposure and if it is more of a blue tint it will seem more cold. But on the other hand those that are more yellow looking they will feel more warm.

Bracketing

Here I used bracketing by taking three shots right in a row. The first three picture I took I used a f stop of four, and a ISO of two hundred. For the second set of photos I also used a f stop of four ans a ISO of four hundred. Lastly I took the last row with a f stop of four and a ISO of eight hundred. So the reason that the first row of pictures are much darker than the second and last row is because I used a lower ISO in the first row, which will make the pictures appear darker. Then in the last row I used a ISO of eight hundred which resulted in more light exposure.
